Help Save The Lungs of Leichhardt!

The plan to rezone our West Leichhardt neighbourhood still hangs in the balance

WE NEED YOU to contact Inner West Councillors to urge them not to vote for rezoning our urban forest.

SAVE THE LUNGS OF LEICHHARDT URBAN FOREST

The Urgent Rezoning Threat

Council is about to vote on a planning proposal that would rezone Kegworth, Beeson, Hathern and Tebbutt Streets.

These streets are critical trellis streets that connect with and support the GreenWay from Parramatta Road to Marion Street.

Together this area contains the biggest and densest amount of large mature tree canopy in Leichhardt → It is the Lungs of Leichhardt

Once we lose this precious habitat, it’s gone for all future generations.

NO protection of any tree canopy

NO protection of native animal habitat UNDER SHEDS + HOMES

INCREASED TRAFFIC + POLLUTION + URBAN HEAT EFFECT

DEMOLISHING 60 FAMILY HOMES WITH BACKYARDS FOR SMALL APARTMENTS

This loss will be for very little benefit – there will be no affordable homes created while comparatively affordable family homes with backyards will be knocked down.

The Rezoning Proposal

Most of the homes in the area bounded by Tebbutt, Hathern, Beeson and Kegworth Streets are proposed for rezoning from R1 to R3 to facilitate demolishing 60 houses to make way for 19 blocks of flats

This is not one 3-4 storey apartment being built – this is supporting mass knock downs of blocks of existing homes and destroying an urban forest homing a diverse range of small birds and native wildlife

Major Traffic Issues

Significantly increasing density will also significantly increase traffic jams on a key arterial road that already frequently bottlenecks

Planning Issues

There are multiple planning issues with this proposal for rezoning and its underpinning assumptions and promises

Learn more

Residents Rates

Rezoning will increase rates for residents

Learn more

Flooding

The majority of the area to be rezoned is a designated flood zone which will make any developments harder and more expensive

Heritage

Our area is filled with beautiful Victorian, Federation and early 20th Century houses.
