Our street histories
The suburb of Leichhardt developed over the course of the19th and early 20th centuries as the large landholdings of the early land grants along Parramatta Road were divided into smaller, semi-rural allotments. From 1875, these estates were further subdivided and sold. The Kegworth Estate, 100 acres granted to William Thomas in 1794, was one such estate.
The two maps (Figures 1 and 2) from the 1883 State Library (Author: New South Wales Department of Lands) shows our present day houses which has had subsequent extensions on Tebbutt and Hathern Streets.
The original estate had been reduced to 48 acres of the original 100 acres which included the Tebbutt Street original workmans’ cottages and some of these blocks of land we further subdivided and sold in 1925 which are still standing today.
Note: that some of the house numbers on the maps are not consistent with the current house numbers. It is important to look at land position (ie. Sheet 39 Department of Lands Maps dated 1883 show west of Tebbutt Street – 52 and 54 Tebbutt Street have been renumbered and are currently 50 and 52 Tebbutt Street.
Land sales within the estate commenced by 1879, and continued into the 1920s.
In 1889 other land blocks on Kegworth and Beeson Streets and Tebbutt as shown on Figure 3 were placed on sale.
Much of Section 1 of the Kegworth Estate remained consolidated in Francis James Shaw’s ownership following the initial 1870s subdivision of the estate. His house, known as Rutherford, fronted Parramatta Road. The house is indicated on the 1887 Kegworth Estate subdivision plan, and the 1892 Detail Survey.
Many of the current homes have elements of the original houses. Note: that some of the house numbers on the maps are not consistent with the current house numbers. It is important to look at land position (ie. Kegworth Estate Land sale dated 1889 shows No. 47 and 48 Tebbutt Street which have been renumbered and are currently 30 and 32 Tebbutt Street.
